The future of materials.

Compostable materials and regulations - how to plan changes in packaging?

Packaging regulations in Europe are moving in one direction: materials are to be designed with their future fate in mind. In practice, this means a greater emphasis on recycling, reuse and properly planned biodegradation. Compostable materials, including biopolymers, are becoming one of the possible tools that manufacturers can use

The most important change in thinking is that the choice of plastic is no longer an exclusively technical decision. It becomes an element of the strategy - it affects the way waste is collected, the possibilities of cooperation with local governments, as well as communication with the end customer. Many companies today ask themselves: where in our portfolio compostable material makes sense, and where is it better to bet on other solutions, e.g. recyclable monomaterials?

When planning such changes, it is worth adopting a few simple rules:
  • analyze the entire life of the packaging, not just the production stage,
  • check which collection and processing systems are available in key markets,
  • avoid promises that cannot be confirmed in practice,
  • treat compostable materials as part of a broader puzzle, not the only answer to all challenges.

Biopolymers and other compostable materials can make it easier to adapt to new requirements if they are used where they actually add value — both business and environmental.
